First steps towards a solution

What is the first step towards change?

Recognising that something needs to change!

We are always interested to hear what has prompted clients to seek help in the first place.  Sometimes a client will book an appointment to help them overcome a recent event, maybe a relationship break-up, a redundancy, or an accident of some sort.  More often than not, clients tell us they’ve been struggling with anxiety or low mood for a while.

We know that human brains are designed to register change as a threat, so they often cling to old habits and mindsets.  We have a built-in preference to repeat patterns of behaviour and thought, even if they are negative, rather than use more brain energy in order to change those patterns.  In other words, our brains would prefer to stay in an uncomfortable situation, rather than do anything to improve it.

In light of this, we don’t underestimate the level of insight required for clients to recognise that something needs to change.

Small steps to big change
Small steps to big change

Realising that things can change

Frequently, clients will say something like: ‘I’ve always been anxious and I’m probably too old to change’  Nothing could be further from the truth!

Science has shown us that we can influence the structure of our brains, and hence our thought patterns, by consciously directing our thoughts in a more helpful direction. We do this by focusing on solutions and developing positive behaviours.  But as Neuro-leadership experts David Rock and Jeffery Schwartz point out, this requires energy and effort.

Clients need to understand that they do have to apply some effort to elicit change – hypnotherapy is something we work on together, it’s not something we ‘do’ to them.

Understanding how to change

We also have to understand how brain functions are fundamental to moving forward.  During every session with clients we place a great deal of emphasis on the explanation of the functioning of the brain. It can be a huge revelation for clients when they understand why they are feeling the way they do, and of course, what they can do to change unhelpful, habitual patterns of thought.

After that, sessions involve guiding clients towards their preferred future.  We do this using solution focused techniques designed to overcome the brain’s default desire to maintain the status quo.

With the emphasis on solutions and positivity, change happens naturally, one step at a time.

What’s even better?  Well, you can learn all about this on our Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma course and then work with this fascinating area of work to help improve your clients’ lives!  No previous qualifications or training required – we train students who have good common sense and a personality that is suitable to work with members of the public.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Hypnotherapy training for sports performance

Glenn Catley HypnotherapyGlenn Catley – former World Champion Boxer to speak at CPHT Manchester

Glenn Catley is a former World Champion Boxer (Super Middleweight Division).  We’re very proud that he will be visiting CPHT Manchester on our forthcoming course to explain how hypnotherapy helped him achieve his World Champion status.

As lecturers we know that one of the best ways we can help sporting people is to help improve their confidence in their performance.  It’s then amazing what they can achieve.

If a person is struggling to achieve their true potential, then sometimes they focus on what is going wrong rather than what is going well.  To overcome their nerves before a big race or get the right mindset before significant trials, we help them to achieve a positive mindset and help overcome the negatives. Sport is not just about physical ability, it’s also about mental ability.

Visualisation Helps

Jessica Ennis-Hill, Heptathlon Gold medallist in the London 2012 Olympics, is quoted as saying: “I use visualisation to think about the perfect technique. If I can get that perfect image in my head, then hopefully it’ll affect my physical performance.”

In one study, Jon Williamson (a professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center who studies the brain’s role in exercise and physical activity), examined athletes riding exercise bikes under hypnosis:

“We told them they were about to go up a hill, and their heart rate increased even though their workload hadn’t changed. When that happened, we saw activation in the insular cortex [part of the brain],” he said. Other studies have shown athletes can even prepare their bodies to perform well despite a decrease in ambient oxygen levels if they know the drop is coming in advance…”

When our CPHT Manchester joint lecturers, Nic and Debs, work with sporting professionals, they ask them to direct their thoughts towards what they want to achieve, then they will get better results.

At CPHT Manchester, we are very successfully producing clinical hypnotherapists that understand how people can enhance their performance.

Get in touch if you want to be part of a very successful team of students who will be having fun learning about hypnotherapy starting this February!  Call Nicola on 0773 866 5172 or email us via info@cphtmanchester.co.uk.

Research for hypnotherapy

Does Hypnotherapy work?

This is one of the questions our students will be asked by friends or colleagues.  It’s a question that both Debbie and Nicola, as lecturers at CPHT Manchester, get asked 10 years after we originally qualified.

We could simply answer “yes!” and give a long list of personal examples which both ourselves and the students across the CPHT schools of training will have amassed.  But stories and anecdotal evidence is not solid evidence.

There is an ever-increasing amount of good quality evidence out there confirming the effectiveness of solution focused therapy, along with the benefits of hypnosis.  This is supported by the latest understanding in neuroscience.

It sometimes takes a little time for evidence to become mainstream and more widely accepted by the public and the medical fraternity.  That should not be an excuse to sit and wait though.

At CPHT Manchester we encourage all our hypnotherapy students to participate in a far-reaching research programme. This has already demonstrated the effectiveness of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.

The Research Programme:

The Clifton Practice Outcome Rating Programme (CORP) has been designed to measure effectiveness whilst remaining positive and solution focused.

The software is used by students in a very simple way that fits within sessions and benefits both the student and client. Students ask their customers to rate themselves against some simple scales in the initial consultation and at the end of each session thereafter.

The software allocates a score out of 10 for each answer and the changes are measured over a period of time and illustrated in graph form.  Both student and customer can easily see what has changed across the scales.

The Benefits:

Students quickly realise the power of being part of this exciting piece of research. They benefit as practitioners (they are able to compare their results to the global results of other participating hypnotherapists), plus clients benefit from being able to see their own progress. Clients then have an expectation of the progress they can make from past global results. They are also reminded of the areas they should focus on to maximise their improvements.

Hypnotherapists’ Small Steps

Small steps help!

Nic and Debs, as course lecturers, guide our students to develop skills in a structured way and, in the same way as we encourage our clients, we do this by encouraging small steps.  If you bite off more than you can chew, we may end up in a place where we are putting too much pressure on ourselves.  Whereas by looking at the next ‘small step’ towards our overall goal, we’re much more likely to achieve that goal.

Sometimes we may tell our clients a story to get a point across.  One such story about ‘small steps’ is that of Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon!  We regale how he didn’t just take one giant leap for mankind all in one go.  No, he originally had to take the small step of learning how to fly way before he even applied to NASA, and imagine all the small training steps in between first deciding to become an astronaut and going on to land on the moon?

Working out how to get to a goal is almost as important as the goal itself, especially if a client is anxious or depressed.

Solution Focused Techniques

Using Solution Focused techniques, we help our clients adopt a positive attitude towards life and we get our students to adopt a positive attitude towards their training/portfolio etc. We encourage them to focus on what is possible and achievable, rather than mulling over perceived problems.

The results are usually rather impressive!  Our client therapy sessions and student course weekends are positively oriented, uplifting and fun. In fact, it’s not uncommon for people to comment on the amount of laughter emanating from our training rooms. One student on Nic’s CPHT Belfast course even asked if all courses were this much fun, to which Nic replied very happily “Yes”!

Small steps include laughter!

So if you would like a career that changes your life for the positive, as well as the lives of your future clients, then do get in touch!  After all, getting in touch is only one small step, isn’t it?

We are starting our next course in February!

Nic and Debs

CPHT Manchester Hypnotherapy Training

Fun with hypnotherapy training

Hypnotherapy with us is fun!

When Debs and Nic are in the classroom teaching their students how to help their clients using hypnotherapy, they have fun and there will be much laughter.

As David Newton, founder of CPHT, is always saying: “It needs to be fun” and he also says “We need to get on with it”.  So when it comes to training at CPHT Manchester we really do like to ‘get on with it’ and have fun.

Even in the interviews we like to laugh and this carries on to the course weekends themselves.  There will be a great deal of concentration too we hasten to add, especially in the early days as students get to grips with neuroscience and how the brain works.

So why are the words ‘we just have to get on with it’ frequently heard in the classroom?  Well, we know the subconscious mind is an absolute professional at procrastination, therefore gentle encouragement to get on and do something, or even simply start a process can be useful – especially when it comes to starting to write up the portfolio that is required at the end of the course!

Fun and laughter is good for the brain.

Many of CPHT’s courses are located within therapy centres and it’s not unusual for receptionists to comment “It’s not supposed to be fun you know”. But we suppose that’s where solution focused hypnotherapy is a bit different, both with the training and once the student graduates and takes a smile into the clinic when meeting a client.

In fact, we’ve had other therapy centre clients and therapists so intrigued they sign up for the course, as do quite a few of our clients from our own hypnotherapy practices.

So keep smiling, it is proven to be very good for you.  And if you want cheering up, then perhaps it is time for that change of career, so have a chat with us.  Our next course starts in February 2018 and we’re already interviewing and have students signed up – it’s going to be good! Manchester Hypnotherapy Practitioners Diploma Courses, 2016, Dates In!

Hands on from Day One
Hands on from Day One

Dates (see relevant page on site) are in for Manchester’s first Hypnotherapy HPD Courses for 2016. Once again we are advertising a weekday course alongside the weekend course and hope that in time this will become the permanent model, on a bi-annual basis. CPHT has an unbeatable record for post graduate success, and even many of our students who choose not to take the HPD option still go on successfully into business, and remain so.

It’s the hands on nature of our training, combined with focusing on a particular mode of practice, rather than trying to deliver ‘everything hypnotherapy’ in the basic practitioners course, that allows our graduates to feel confident to deal with whoever walks through their clinic door from day one….and what better base from which to develop your broader interest/s in Hypnotherapy than from the perspective of a successful Hypnotherapy Practice?

Ring Course Leader, Alan, now on 0161 820 8135….. and secure your Early Bird discount!

Weekend and Weekday Manchester Courses Announced

The ‘dust’ is now settling on course M3, the portfolios are waiting to be sent off to NCH and NCFE, and the graduates are at various stages of establishing their practices. M4 are moving along nicely, bagging their first volunteer stop smokers, producing websites and practicing for practical assessments. M5 got off to a lovely start earlier this month, a small but perfectly formed group…lots of laughter, mostly at Alan, but he’ll get his own back!

What an ideal time to announce the dates for our next Weekend Hypnotherapy HPD Course and what we hope will be our first, of many, Weekday Hypnotherapy HPD Courses. Both course will start in September, and the Monday Tuesday course will run off the back of the weekend course in terms of dates, so Sat Sun/Mon Tue.

Both weekend course and midweek course will lead to the same quality of qualification, which will be the Clifton Practice Diploma in Solution Focussed Hypnotherapy (DSFH), and the externally verified (NCFE) Hypnotherapy Practitioners Diploma (HPD), which accreditation as level 4 on the National Careers Framework  (NCF) makes it a nationally recognised qualification, fully qualifying you to work as a Hypnotherapist.

Beware, only accept qualifications with bonafide external verification from NCFE or C&G, with accreditation on the NCF, if you want a substantive, meaningful and recognised qualification! If they’re not, ask why they’re not.

Early Bird discounts are running on the September Courses until July end 2015, after that only postcode discounts will apply.  BOOK NOW.

Congratulations to our Latest HPD Hypnotherapy Graduates !

Graduation Day, Well Done

Course M2 Graduated in October and whilst they continued to build their already developing practices, the hard work of verifying their Portfolios for their HPDs began. Alan was impressed, but of course the value of external verification is that it’s not up to Alan…….so Portfolios were sent off to the National Council for Hypnotherapy verifier, and then on to NCFE. The verifiers concurred with Alan, and were so impressed with the standard of work they commented…….

“…….the work was of an excellent standard, and the students should be very proud of all the hard work that they put into this.  It was a pleasure to read.”

Alan (Course Leader) says, group “M2 should be proud of themselves, they have excelled and it has been noticed, and of course that is nothing new for CPHT…it seems that the people who are serious about Hypnotherapy as a Career realise that CPHT is the place to come…..

….It takes a little while to go through the Hypnotherapy HPD verification process, and I find myself focussed on working with group M3 towards their graduation now, but overall, what I find most impressive, is that with Manchester’s first group having completed in December ’13, we remain in a position that every person who has completed the HPD course with us remains in full or part time practice, nearly 18 months on from our first graduates, and it is that, more than anything else, that we are all about.”

Why not sign up to the next CPHT Hypnotherapy HPD course in Manchester, starting in May 2015.

Next Manchester Hypnotherapy HPD Course

CPHT will start their next Weekend Hypnotherapy HPD Course in May 2015. Running for the usual 10 months, the course will graduate in February 2016. Dates are now available on this site, and the course venue will the the popular and friendly Castlefield Hotel, off Deansgate, Central Manchester. A high proportion of the candidates for course M4 (now under way) were from outside Manchester, and were grateful for the postcode discount which has helped offset their travel and accommodation costs, see ‘fees’.

The CPHT Manchester HPD Hypnotherapy course M5, 2015/2016, will carry a 10% Early Bird discount for candidates applying before the end of 2014, so that’s a £236 saving for booking early, and if you live outside Manchester you could benefit further (above). Maximum allowable discount is 20%, or £472.

CPHT’s reputation keeps on growing and growing, and one of the reasons for this is the sense of inclusivity. We’re not training competitors, we’re training people to be a part of our whole inclusive family of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy practitioners, and the more good, confident, modern therapists there are, the more work there will be for all of us.

Only The Best is Good Enough!

Several years ago Hypnotherapy/ists failed in their attempts to bring about Voluntary Self Regulation (VSR). At the time it was broadly agreed that if we managed VSR, that the gateway entry to Hypnotherapy, for those who wished to practice under the regulated ‘umbrella’, would be the Hypnotherapy Practitioners Diploma, or HPD.

The quality mark of  the HPD was (and remains) that it could only be delivered by schools externally accredited by an independent arbiter such as NCFE or C&G, and the standards of work by the students would be audited by the same.

Since the dissolution of those efforts (and some would say that the increasing profile of the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council [CNHC] suggests not all was lost) we have seen a proliferation of short, or cheap, or correspondence, or bargain (Groupon) courses in Hypnotherapy, which of course are appealing to people who are short on cash, or in a hurry to qualify, and of course, CPHT have had to respond to this, and we have…..

Please welcome the highest qualification currently available in Hypnotherapy…the Advanced Hypnotherapy Diploma (AHD) granted level 5 equivalence by NCFE, and available to all HPD graduates of CPHT.

Faced with a dilution of standards, this is the way a serious Hypnotherapy School should react, and if you’re serious about a career in Hypnotherapy, and would like to find yourself still practising a year after graduating, then we would hope that this lights the way for you.

Be the best you can.

Dates Announced for ‘BITE SIZE’ Hypnotherapy HPD Course

CPHT Manchester are proud to announce the dates for our ‘bite size’ Hypnotherapy HPD Course starting in Manchester from January 2015.

Instead of whole day blocks, the Hypnotherapy HPD course has been broken up into more frequent, smaller 3.5 hour units, which will be held on Tuesday evenings, except Tuesdays that follow Bank Holiday Mondays, either in Central Manchester or Sale, (TBA).

If time off work is a problem, or if you have been daunted by the idea of whole weekends studying at a time, this is the course for you, and the Hypnotherapy HPD you graduate with will be every bit as credible and recognised as the weekend course qualification.

All the usual CPHT features are there, the emphasis on ‘hands on’, the inclusive ‘price included’ HPD, all course leaders and contributors are graduates of CPHT and in practice as Hypnotherapists, and of course we continue to offer a monthly payment option, ‘as you go’.

If you’re looking for a new start as a Hypnotherapist in Manchester, you couldn’t do better than CPHT and now there’s yet another way of doing it.

Ring Alan Wick on 0161 820 8135, or e mail alanwick@cpht.co.uk for more details or apply from here.

Weekends a Problem?…never quite sure when you’ll be given days off?

CPHT Manchester are piloting a ***HPD Hypnotherapy midweek evening course for just this reason.

Many applicants struggle to get weekends off, and recently, after we had advertised a Thu/Fri course, we were contacted by a hairdresser who pointed out that Friday and Saturday are her two busiest days in work, so neither course worked for her.

As a result of the above, we will shortly publish dates for a Tuesday evening course (Tuesday seemed to be the least likely day to encroach on any other commitments), which will run on a weekly basis, dividing the usual weekend module into four, and even managing a couple of Tuesdays off!

The qualification from this course will be every bit as credible and recognised as the weekend course…so, if this approach appeals to you, give Alan a call on 0161 820 8135 or e mail at alanwick@cpht.co.uk

***Dates for the course will begin in January, 2015, and will be posted in the next week or two. Go ahead is subject to reaching a minimum number of applicants.

CPHT Manchester post dates for our next HPD Hypnotherapy Course

Your next opportunity to embark on the Hypnotherapy HPD qualification in Manchester with CPHT will be in November 2014. Commencing in November Sat 15/Sun 16 the course will operate over one weekend a month for 10 months, graduating in August 2015.

Graduates will be fully qualified to practice as Hypnotherapists for all presentations, and will have the unique confidence that only comes from working extensively with members of the public throughout their training.

Course Leader, Alan Wick, himself a CPHT Graduate from 2008, says;          “…it was this practical work during my training, that gave me the confidence to know that I was doing the right thing once I had qualified….. that, and the second to none post grad. supervision experience from CPHT…..”       If you are considering a career in Hypnotherapy in Manchester, or considering Hypnotherapy as part of a ‘portfolio’ approach to self employment, you won’t be better prepared for a successful career than by CPHT.
