If you were instrumental in helping only one other human being to change their life for the better so dramatically that they said something like: “I really didn’t realise how wonderful just being alive could be!” you’d feel pretty pleased for that individual. As a hypnotherapist you will not be helping just one person, but scores, hundreds – even thousands – to that same sense of liberation and well-being.
The Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma (HPD) Course is a lively and practical 10 month course designed to enable you to go successfully and competently into private practice, safe in the knowledge that you have the support of the CPHT team if at any time you need professional help or advice. CPHT specialises in producing graduates who are successful as practitioners both for part-time and full-time careers. It is probable that we have the best record for this in the country.
While the course structure is based predominantly on the work and experience of David Newton, it has the enormous advantage of including the valued writings of other experienced practitioners. It is predominantly Solution Focused but we will teach the very best of NLP and CBT.
The HPD Course
The HPD Course is of approximately 120 hours duration of classroom study (plus practice between sessions and required reading) over a period of 10 months. Successful graduation leads to a full Diploma qualification (DSFH) and the nationally accredited (NCFE) Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma (HPD).
The study materials for the course have been prepared and selected by David Newton and include 250,000 word course notes. Classroom tuition is in groups of approximately 22-24, ensuring the very best of personal attention for everybody, and our on-going interest in our students extends beyond training into continuing professional support. On this course, you will learn about hypnotherapy, not just in theory but also with plenty of practice, and how to be thoroughly effective as a psychotherapist, too. We also cover marketing and setting up your own practice.
No experience is necessary as the training programme is professionally designed and written to give you a thorough and sound knowledge of the application of ethical clinical hypnosis and hypnotherapy, even if you have no previous experience of the field. The qualifications you receive allow you to easily obtain professional liability insurance; we will even introduce you to insurers who will provide it.
CPHT training is dedicated to providing the very best of personal tuition for every student, whether that student is studying at home or in our classroom. Classroom tuition is in manageable groups. This ensures the very best of personal attention for everybody.
The tuition programme is conducted in a modular fashion and covers all that you need to know in order to start finding success very early on in training. AT CPHT we encourage students to see as many ‘clients’ as possible during the course.

Method of Hypnotherapy
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is the modern method which helps with a large range of symptoms. This therapy focuses on helping people achieve what they want to in life. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses practical, modern and well researched strategies to help people make significant, positive changes in their lives in a relatively short period of time.
Working with Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, we look at what the client wants to achieve rather than on the problem(s) that prompted them to seek change. The approach focuses on the present and future and not on the past. The Hypnotherapist asks the client to consider their preferred future, for instance, what would be better if the problem had improved? What would have changed? This enables the client’s possible solutions to become more apparent and worked towards.
Hypnosis itself reduces anxiety and this is done very simply through relaxation and visualisation, allowing the client to focus on the positive aspects of their lives that encourages a shift in perspective. Working with the client, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help with Confidence and Self Esteem problems. The therapy can also help (if necessary in conjunction with medication) with the treatment of Depression and Anxiety, including Panic Attacks, Agoraphobia and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Minor Phobias such as spiders, water, flying etc. and public speaking can also be minimised, along with painful memories and traumatic experiences.
Training in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy at The Clifton Practice is intensive and thorough. In particular, you will be well drilled in anti-smoking techniques.
Weekend or Weekday Courses
Students have the choice between week-end or week-day courses to best accommodate their availability. The courses are each complete in their own right, and whichever study option you choose you will always be able to rely on us for support and advice in your therapeutic endeavours whenever you need it.
When learning a new skill, the quality of the training you receive is obviously very important. When there are too many teachers, maintaining a guaranteed quality of tuition is as difficult for a hypnotherapy school as it is in the ‘standard’ educational system. And when any one class is taught by several different tutors, then this problem becomes even more noticeable. On the other hand, if you have only one teacher, you may well find that you acquire a somewhat narrow view of the subject, thus hindering your future development.
Our training programme avoids these potential difficulties. First of all, David Newton himself supervises tuition, ensuring that you acquire a sound ‘central knowledge base’ from a leading teacher/practitioner. Then other senior professionals present lectures and talks, ensuring that your expertise will be as well-rounded as possible.
Ten consecutive, monthly, intensive two-day weekend classes providing a total of 120 hours of tuition, coupled with a few more hours per week of practice and home study – a reading list is provided along with a written course. Students are assessed throughout their training and there will be a requirement for a practical assessment. At the end of the studies students are required to submit a portfolio, compiled throughout the training for assessment, both within CPHT and for external accreditation.
It is possible, if weekends are a difficulty, or if the course timing is inappropriate, to train during the week. The training materials, practice, homework and assessment assignments are identical to the weekend course. The training takes place on consecutive Thursday and Fridays once a month. As with the weekend course it is intensive and course run over a ten month period. At the end of the studies students are required to submit a portfolio, compiled throughout the training for assessment, both within CPHT and for external accreditation.
CPHT’s high position in the hierarchy of UK schools inevitably necessitates a good deal of extra mural work by students. Because the work is interesting and often very enjoyable most people, even those in full time employment, are able to cope admirably.
Postgraduate Support and Career Development
Graduates will be expected to remain in formal supervision for the first three/five years of their practice (dependant on which Professional Association they are a member of). This may be in either a group situations or individually, and is invariably considered by ex-students to be both enjoyable and supportive. To support our graduates we have a number of CPHT trained and externally accredited supervisors.
There is an on-going Continuous Professional Development Programme (CPD) in place at CPHT.
Examples of the on-going CPD programme would be:
- Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
- Fertility, Childbirth and Working with Children
- Neuroscience and Obesity
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Hypnosis and Disease
